Language Lessons for a Living Education

Description

Language Lessons for a Living Education is a gentle, Charlotte Mason-inspired language arts program from Master Books. It beautifully integrates composition, narration, dictation, handwriting, picture study, grammar, mechanics, vocabulary, and spelling into one cohesive, literature-rich course with a strong biblical worldview.

Using living books and meaningful activities, the program emphasizes oral narration, meaningful writing, Scripture memorization, and gentle skill-building over time rather than worksheet-heavy busywork. Lessons are relational, engaging, and designed to nurture both language skills and Godly character.

Getting Started

If your young child needs a transitional phonics course, the publisher recommends using Foundations Phonics, a one-semester program for Kindergarten or Grade 1, before beginning Language Lessons Level 1. For students in Grade 2 and up, use the free online placement guide to choose the best level based on skills rather than grade.

Program Overview

  • Levels 1–6 (Elementary): Flexible placement focused on skills. Lessons spiral gently and build gradually.
  • Levels 7–11 (Middle & High School): More structured by grade with increasing independence and deeper writing demands.
  • Level 1 is a gentle, short introduction often spread over a full year with younger students. All other levels are designed for one full school year (36 weeks).

Each level comes in a single consumable, 3-hole-punched Course Book that serves as both student workbook and teacher guide. Lower levels include short teacher notes right in the lessons. Every level features a substantial Teacher’s Aid section at the back with answer keys, reproducible resources, optional games, copywork, grammar helps, and quarterly assessments.

What You’ll Need

This program functions as a complete language arts course when paired with quality living books. Some reading suggestions are provided, and most levels require one additional biblically oriented reader or classic text (for example, 101 Favorite Stories from the Bible is used in Levels 3–5 and God’s Story in Levels 7–8). Master Books also provides free downloadable PDF resources for each level.

Students study, memorize, and apply Scripture throughout (using NASB in Levels 1–6, NKJV in 7–8, and multiple versions in upper levels). This program is a popular choice for families who want a gentle, literature-rich, Charlotte Mason-style language arts curriculum that nurtures both strong skills and Godly character from a biblical perspective.
