Publisher's Description of Latin Alive Book 2 Streaming Program

Latin Alive! Book 2 (Student Edition) continues the relevant, rigorous, and incremental Latin instruction begun in Latin Alive! Book 1. The Latin Alive! series features original Latin writings, giving students access to the works of great Latin authors. As the second text in a three-year series, Latin Alive! Book 2 is an entry point to advanced grammatical studies.

Full program includes:

  • Latin Alive! Book 2 (Student Edition) This book contains 33 weekly chapters, including 6 review chapters. Latin Alive! Book 2 reviews the grammar of Latin Alive! Book 1 and introduces the passive voice in all tenses; past, present, and future participles; deponent and irregular verbs; and comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs. Each chapter begins with a country’s Latin motto, strategically chosen to introduce or review a grammatical concept. Extensive study of Latin derivatives and stories of Roman culture, myths, and history make Latin come alive, even in our modern world. Substantial Latin readings and translation exercises adapted from Latin literature continues to prepare students for the National Latin Exam or an Advanced Placement Latin class. This student edition includes historical and literary contributions by historian Christopher Schlect and classical scholars Karl Galinsky and Timothy Moore.
  • Latin Alive! Book 2 Teacher's Edition This edition includes the full content of the Latin Alive! Book 2 Student Edition, plus extensive explanations, an answer key, and translations, as well as teacher’s tips, additional student exercises, and unit tests.
  • Latin Alive! Book 2 Streaming Video & Audio Author and teacher Karen Moore continues her excellent Latin instruction in the Latin Alive! Book 2 Video, which contains 27 lessons, each an average of 40 minutes. This brings the total length of video to nearly 18 hours of instruction, all taught by an enthusiastic and delightful teacher! The audio recording features the unit review Latin readings by Nicholas Martin and Gaylan DuBose. The streaming option provides the convenience of instant access, as well as desktop, smart TV, and mobile viewing capabilities.  For Homeschoolers, streaming access lasts for the life of the product.
Category Description for Latin Alive!

Latin Alive! is a middle school (and early high school) Latin program from Classical Academic Press made for beginners. There will be 3 levels when the revision is complete, each a full school year of study. Chapters are grouped into 5 units, with each unit ending with a reading portion that includes some history of ancient Rome and the world affected by Rome. Students love this part!

The revision largely changed how the content is presented. It now has a less intense, more enjoyable pacing. Parents/teachers have the option to extend exercises or use them in a simpler form. The older and new editions are not compatible. It is important to note that Latin Alive! when done with the additional practice prepares students for both the National Latin Exam and an Advanced Placement Latin course.

Students learn the basics, including classical pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, translating, speaking, and Roman culture and history (in English). Unit review chapters resemble the format of the reading comprehension portion of the National Latin Exam and the multiple-choice section of the AP Latin exam.

Each student will need a consumable Student Edition. You will find classical pronunciation, a complete glossary of vocabulary words, grammar lessons & exercises, sentence translation, multi-sensory exercises, chapter readings, unit reviews, reading helps, historical context, and bonus material. Helpful appendices add convenient references for the student. These are not reproducible.

Whether you are teaching a co-op, classroom, or a student at home, you will need the Teacher Edition*. This includes student pages with answers filled in, a pacing guide to complete a chapter over 8 instructional days (32 weeks), and helpful tips to make you feel more confident as the teacher.

*Assessments (chapter quizzes) are not in the Teacher’s Edition. A Quiz Packet can be purchased separately from www.classicalacademicpress.com . The downloadable packet includes a weekly quiz for each chapter, complete scoring key, and suggested scoring.

Streaming Videos offer weekly 30-minute video lessons with author, Karen Moore. Not only does this help the parent who may not be solid in Latin, but it guides the students in correct pronunciation. You will receive an email with access to these videos. Access is for the life of the product.

Topics covered include:

Book 1: all 5 declensions, present/imperfect/future/perfect/future perfect tense, personal pronouns, roman numerals, nominative/vocative/accusative/genitive/ablative case, interrogative sentences, appositives, irregular verbs, The Trojan War, Descendants of Aeneas, Death of Caesar, and more!

Book 2: thorough review of grammar in Book 1, dative/locative case, comparisons, adverbs, time expressions, irregular verbs, mood, negative, voice, indicatives, pluperfect and future perfect, review of sentence patterns, In Catilinam, Caesar’s Eulogy, Battle of Actinum, Pax Romana, Claudius, and more!

What’s different in the 2024 revision?

  • Entire series now offers a better pace (schole – restful learning approach)
  • Now 22 chapters instead of 29
  • Some chapter readings have been shortened
  • More, and longer exercises to practice grammar and reading added (to be used at the teacher’s discretion)
  • Additional exercises to practice speaking, listening, observing, drawing & moving around
