HMH Journeys Reading Curriculum

Description

Come alongside your students and fortify their reading comprehension and exposure to different reading styles with the reading portion from HMH Journeys for elementary students. Equipped with a Close Reader students will be guided through appropriate level reading selections, working on their comprehension skills. The Close Reader contains the reading selections and are presented in different styles; short stories, poetry, informational text, plays, persuasive essays, etc. Students are guided through the Close Reader on how best to analyze and take notes while they read. Comprehension questions are found throughout. Each grade level contains 30 lessons, allowing students to take a full week to closely read each selection that are also grouped together by theme: 6 units with 5 readings each.

The Student Reader Notebook is where students work on ELA skills, which does include phonics review at the younger levels. Small writing assignments building critical thinking skills, grammar, spelling, and comprehension work are also featured. Some of the comprehension work may need to be adjusted or skipped in each level. This is an independent resource and does not corelate with the Close Reader selections. You can do these two components independently of each other.  Some grade levels will also have a Common Core Edition of the reader notebook. Through side-by-side evaluations, there is no notable difference between the two editions.

The final component at each grade level is the Teacher Edition. This provides reduced student pages of the Reader’s Notebook with suggested answers for every page in the Reader’s Notebook. There are no teacher materials for the Close Reader portion of this program.  ~Rebecca
