Victus Study Skills System
For middle/high schoolers, IEW offers this well-established study skills methodology developed by Susan Ison and originally taught through the Memphis Tutorial Association. Taken from Latin meaning way of life, the Victus Study System aims "to equip the student for success in academics and in life." Students have a role in their own success. By understanding specific steps and strategies, developing specific skills, and utilizing tools, they increase the ability and likelihood of using these daily. The course plan is based on one week (five days) of one-hour sessions. The lessons move students through evaluating where they are now (current study habits and learning strengths), exploring where they want to be (mission and goal setting), and determining how to get there (time management, organization, PQRST Preview Question Read State Test, listening, note taking, and test taking). Lessons combine teacher-led content and student workbook exercises.
The Teacher Edition provides the overall philosophy, general instruction, suggestions for effective techniques, detailed specific lessons, and student pages with answers. The Student Workbook provides space to work through the strategies, compile information, and practice techniques. While there is some instruction, it is clearly designed to be used in conjunction with the Teacher Edition. This book becomes a student study manual that can be referenced for motivation, inspiration, or review. Both Teacher and Student contain the same additional information and exercises in the Appendix. The Combo provides both the Teacher and the Student books. Teacher 82 pgs, spiral-bound. Student 63 pgs, spiral-bound. ~ Janice
