Henle Latin is a classic, rigorous, and highly
respected four-year Latin program from Loyola University Press. Designed for serious high school students, it provides a
systematic, thorough approach to Latin grammar, vocabulary, and translation,
preparing students to read original Latin texts with confidence.
The program emphasizes mastery of forms and syntax through
steady progression, moving from basic grammar to reading authentic works by
Caesar, Cicero, and Virgil.
Henle Latin’s Four Levels
First
Year Henle: Thorough grounding in Latin forms, basic syntax, and
vocabulary. Includes simple readings and many practice exercises.
Second
Year Henle: Reviews first-year material and moves into Caesar’s
Commentaries. Features extensive translation practice (Latin to English
and English to Latin).
Third
Year Henle: Focuses primarily on Cicero with translation exercises
drawn directly from his writings.
Fourth
Year Henle: Advanced readings from both Cicero and Virgil, with longer
and more challenging passages.
