BJU Reading 2 4th Edition is a comprehensive reading
program that provides all kinds of wholesome and delightful stories for
students to enjoy including realistic fiction, historical fiction, fables,
folktales, and poetry. Literature is evaluated through a biblical worldview
with six themed units that focus on wisdom, hard work, kindness, obedience,
God’s creation, and contentment. Reading selections increase in difficulty as
the program progresses. At the end of the program, a fifteen lesson novel study
is centered around the book, The Sword in the Tree. Explicit phonics and
vocabulary instruction also help build reading skills. Comprehension is taught
using both simple recall and open-ended questions. Students gain fluency by
reading both orally and independently.
This new edition has several updates. There are six units
instead of four including the novel study. Some reading selections were
replaced due to copyright reasons or academic rigor. A 4-step teaching cycle
has been implemented in the teacher guide along with Biblical Worldview Shaping
in the unit openers. A greater focus is placed on phonics instruction including
differentiated phonics and new phonics lessons to accommodate individual
learning needs.
