BJU Math 3 follows Hailey and Horatio, two fun characters with lots of adventures, that help students see how math connects to a biblical worldview and is relevant to everyday life. Students learn number sense and an understanding of place value, data interpretation, fractions, geometric figures, measurement, time and money skills, decimals, applying the Engineering Design Process to solve STEM problems, while continuing to develop fluency in basic math skills. The Homeschool Kit includes the Teacher Edition Parts 1 & 2 with Teacher Edition Companion Guide, Student Worktext, Reviews Book, Homeschool Visuals, Student Manipulatives, Assessments, and Assessments Answer Key.
The Teacher Edition has detailed lesson plans with a four-step teaching cycle: Engage (lesson opener, fact review, essential questions); Instruct (direct instruction using videos, manipulatives, and more); Assess (using assessments and review to evaluate learning); and Apply (guided instructions and worktext practice). Biblical worldview themes are highlighted throughout. A detailed chapter overview gives parents an overall snapshot of the chapter objectives, resources needed, and how to implement assessments or review. Lessons have teacher instruction wrapped around a reduced copy of the Student Worktext pages and Review Book pages (with answers). Strategies for differentiated instruction are also included. The Homeschool Hub at the publisher’s website provides free digital resources to further support the lessons.
The Teacher Edition Companion is designed to help simplify the lessons for homeschoolers. The front of the guide gives a quick overview of each chapter and lesson. Then in a one-page format for each lesson, there are page numbers along with a visual representation of the pages covered, key questions, objectives, biblical worldview shaping, required materials, and assignment options. This helps parents tailor the lessons to their child’s needs. While the Teacher Edition has more extensive teacher help, the Companion Guide gives you a big picture view of every lesson. The guide is not sold separately and is only included through the purchase of a teacher guide.
The full-color Student Worktext offers lesson practice to reinforce concepts learned. Two pages per lesson are given, one that includes guided practice and one for independent practice. “Learning target” statements help students understand the specific goal they're working toward, rather than just completing tasks without knowing why. The end of every independent practice page includes a few review problems. Chapter Review and Cumulative Review pages are at the end of each chapter.
The black and white Reviews Book provides two pages of review for each lesson. The first page offers additional practice with the new content just learned and the second page reviews concepts from earlier lessons along with math fact practice. Chapter and Cumulative Review are also included.
Homeschool Visuals and Student Manipulatives include colorful visuals and manipulatives on cardstock. Some visuals might include a place value chart, line plot, measurements, graphs, temperature, money, fraction bars, decimals and fact family flash cards. The Visuals also include larger versions of the student manipulatives. Student Manipulatives consist of place value and decimal place value pocket charts, place value pieces, number line, money, clock, thermometer, money, inch and centimeter ruler, yard and meter tape, fraction pieces, and shapes. Families can store these manipulatives in separate bags with labels to keep them organized.
Assessments include the tests for each chapter. Assessments Answer Key has a copy of the Assessments with answers in red. ~ Gina
