Description

BJU Press Handwriting 3rd Edition teaches young children to write and read cursive. Building on the PreCursive handwriting learned in grades 1 and 2, students review cursive letters taught in grade 2 and practice reading and copying poems, Bible verses, and short paragraphs. Keeping a Biblical focus, many passages reflect on God’s character. The Homeschool Kit includes the Student Worktext and the Teacher Guide.

Using the theme “journeys”, the Student Worktext contains a variety of activities and passages about traveling. After each cursive letter is reviewed and practiced, students begin to copy words and sentences and answer questions in their own cursive handwriting. Lines are 3/8 inches wide with a dotted midline in the first half of the book and no midline in the second half.  For some of the copy work exercises, students need separate handwriting paper.

The Teacher Guide includes a pretest and handwriting evaluation form. PreCursive and Cursive stroke descriptions are displayed for all upper and lowercase letters. For each lesson, there is one page of instruction that also includes a reduced copy of the student page. Bible Action Truths are interwoven into the lessons and prompt biblical discussion. Appendixes include the Bible Action Truths, handwriting reproducible paper with and without midline, a handwriting evaluation form, a glossary of handwriting terms, and an explanation of the gospel. The Homeschool Hub is a free digital resource available to homeschoolers with the purchase of a teacher guide.

The revised 3rd edition includes an updated design, revised activities, new teaching strategies, and a stronger focus on reading and writing cursive. ~ Gina

Publisher's Description of BJU Press Handwriting 3 Homeschool Kit 3rd Edition
Handwriting 3 continues your child’s cursive journey by building fluency, neatness, and confidence in writing. Lessons emphasize proper posture, pencil grip, and stroke sequence while connecting cursive letters to their PreCursive forms. With practice in slant, spacing, and alignment, students develop clear, legible handwriting. Biblical activities—such as copying Scripture and songs—help children see handwriting as a tool for service and worship.

Revised in 2026, BJU Press Handwriting 3rd Edition teaches young students to read and write in cursive. Integrating biblical truths and a “journey” theme, copy work and reading passages focus on the gospel, traveling, and history.
