Description

Zac the puppet learns a lot from his next-door neighbor Mrs. Walker. Every encounter in the backyard brings a new opportunity to explore concepts and to review math facts. This educational series consists of 12 fifteen-minute episodes on two videos. Episodes cover place value to 100, money, time and calendars, metric measurement, customary measurement, geometry, fractions, two-digit addition and subtraction, and renaming readiness. Despite some corny jokes, Mrs. Walker's explanations are clear and easy to understand. In fact, her demonstration on how to tell time is one of the best that I've ever seen. ~ Anh

Category Description for BJU Press Math Grade 1 (5th Ed.)

With BJU Math 1, children learn to problem solve, establish number sense, and practice computational skills through hands-on learning and workbook practice while learning how the main themes of the Bible relate to the study of math. Each chapter focuses on a foundational concept that builds upon prior learned content while also providing cumulative review to develop mastery.

This new edition includes new teaching strategies, an improved look with updated artwork and a new mascot, added STEM activities (chapters 4, 8, 12, and 16) that introduce students to coding concepts, and biblical worldview shaping objectives integrated into the lessons. An essential question has also been added to each chapter to help kids think about the question and come up with an answer. For example, one question is, “How does counting help me learn?”. Because of the revisions, this new edition is not compatible with older editions. The homeschool kit consists of a Student Worktext, Teacher Edition Part 1 and 2, Reviews Book, Student Manipulative Packet, Homeschool Visuals, Assessments, and Assessment Answer Key. Along with these components, students use UNIFIX® Cubes in many of the lessons.

The colorful consumable BJU Press Math 1 Student Worktext allows students to have ample practice. The worktext includes a teacher guided page and an independent practice page for each lesson. Review is also included on the independent page. The end of each chapter has cumulative and chapter review.

Teacher Editions Part 1 & 2 include 180 lessons divided into 21 chapters. Each chapter has a lesson plan overview and instruction. Reduced copies of Worktext and Review pages with answers are included. Instructional aids like games or other activities are in the back of the Teacher Editions. A new four-step teaching cycle (engage, instruct, apply, and assess) has also been implemented as well as suggestions for differentiated instruction. AfterSchoolHelp.com offers speed drills for the student. BJU Press Trove includes digital resources to enhance learning; however, this is only available through schools. Homeschools can find enhanced learning materials through HomeschoolHub.com. The homeschool kit includes information on how to set up a free account.

The Reviews Workbook is black and white and provides 2 pages of additional practice per lesson. The first page reinforces concepts in the worktext and the second page reviews math facts and other concepts. Cumulative and chapter review are also included.

Manipulatives in the Student Manipulatives Packet contain counters, rulers, place value pieces, geometric shapes, fraction pieces, money cutouts, and more. These are on heavy cardstock paper and are easy to tear out and use. It is suggested to use resealable bags to organize and store items.

Visuals are on heavy cardstock paper and include charts to enhance the lessons and larger versions of the student manipulatives for modeling concepts. Some of the visuals and manipulatives include numbers with colors to represent each frame of ten, solid and plane figures, money, clock, calendar, measurements, and much more.

The Assessments Packet includes a test for each of the 21 chapters and the Assessments Answer Key provides an answer key for each test.

This is an engaging and comprehensive program for first grade math. There is plenty of teacher help, student practice, and hands-on activity to accompany different learning styles. Students learn concepts such as place value, shapes, mathematical operations, measurements of time and space, math and engineering skills, and 21st century skills all centered around a Biblical worldview. ~ Gina
