Publisher's Description of Happy Cheetah Reading - Second Grade

With much of the groundwork of early reading already laid, this year your child will rapidly move ahead in vocabulary acquisition and reading fluency. With the Cheetah Ready workbook, the rate of improvement skyrockets. As students read ever longer passages—with several short paragraphs per page—they continue to grow reading confidence and fluency.

About two-thirds of the way through the year, your student will transition to reading beginning chapter books, so that, by the end of this year, your student will be ready to step out more confidently into the larger world of reading.

Your student will enjoy a continued emphasis on copywork, and a deeper focus on spelling.

A complete language arts program, including reading, handwriting, vocabulary acquisition, spelling, grammar, and creative writing.

Dr. Karen worked to deliver the simplest complete program possible. No separate parent manual or additional training required. Short, easy-to-use instructions.

Category Description for Happy Cheetah Reading System

The Happy Cheetah Reading System is a gentle, multisensory K-2 phonics program designed to help children learn to read successfully, even if they have struggled in the past. Created by Dr. Karen Holinga, the author of this complete program uses the "Three C's" of successful reading: Context (stories), Copywork (tracing and writing), and Calmness (short, relaxed lessons that build confidence).

Students begin reading real stories from the very first lesson while learning phonics in a natural, logical way. The program combines reading practice, word building with magnetic letters, dry-erase activities, games, and consistent copywork to create an enjoyable and effective learning experience.

Key Curriculum Features:

  • Short 15-20 minute engaging lessons
  • Stories that are interesting and controlled for early success
  • Built-in handwriting practice (both D’Nealian and Traditional styles)
  • Multisensory activities including magnetic letters, drawing, and games
  • Carefully sequenced progression from beginning sounds to chunking and fluency

Program Structure:

Happy Cheetah includes four color-coded workbooks and corresponding small, colorful readers:

  • Orange (Cub Starting): Early phonics and beginning reading
  • Red (Cub Walking): Strengthening skills
  • Blue (Cub Running): Building fluency
  • Green (Cheetah Ready): Advanced skills with chunking

Program Components:

  • Full-color Student Workbooks
  • 12 Small, engaging Readers

It works particularly well for beginning readers, reluctant readers, and children with learning challenges. After completing Happy Cheetah, students should be reading at a 3rd grade reading level.
