PowerPoint is used extensively, including many of the textbook illustrations (with explanations) as well as illustrations from other sources. Students are encouraged to follow along with the textbook, although the lessons are not word-for-word with the text. Lesson times vary from 15 to 40 minutes (average is 18 minutes). Included in the Biology Course DVDs is the Lab Videos  DVD (also available separately), with explanations of all the labs, including an explanation of what the student will be doing and the helpful demonstrations. Families will also appreciate the microscopic labs, where the author points out structures on a microscope, orienting you to what you should be seeing. Category Description for Science Shepherd Biology (Gr. 10-12)

Science Shepherd Homeschool Biology is an extremely well-designed biology course that includes a fully developed high school lab component. College-preparatory, this one-year Biology course is biblically based, with an emphasis on “showing” students rather than “telling” them how Creation is better substantiated by evidence available. Ecological issues are presented in the same way, with the global warming issue presented as a debate, with evidence presented for both sides. Biochemistry is well-emphasized and taught through abundant diagrams and clear explanations.

Key Curriculum Features:

  • Written from a biblical worldview by a physician and homeschool dad
  • College-preparatory Homeschool Biology Curriculum is designed for independent study
  • Study basic biochemistry, cell structure, genetics, classification, human anatomy, a critical review of creation and evolution origin models, and more
  • Recommended 36-week schedule provided

Science Shepherd Homeschool Biology offers families an academically strong, college-preparatory course from a biblical worldview. While the course can be completed using the Textbook, Answer Key & Parent Companion, and the Test Booklet, the optional Biology Video Course on DVD or the DVD Lab Videos promote independent learning.

One of our favorite characteristics of this course is the lab component. The 20 labs include hands-on experiments, making and viewing slides under a microscope, and a series of dissections from clam to fetal pig—but no frog (the author points out that dissecting a fetal pig is very beneficial because the anatomy of the pig is more like animal and human anatomy and is large enough to easily dissect). Lab instructional materials include a lab manual and a lab DVD.
