This text—which admittedly calls itself “odd”—is yet not as much odd as it is unique in its presentation of a topic that has likely never occurred to many. The central concept of this book is to glean insight from Christianity in the medieval times, especially in the context of comparison to our current modernist culture. From church to feasts to worship to family and much more, each topic is thoroughly examined through the lens of medievalism in contrast to how the modern world views it. Arguments are well-researched and well-explained, and with each chapter functioning on its own while still connecting to the broader theme, it is easy to read in small portions or jump to a topic you are particularly interested in. The author quotes plenty of Scripture and other sources and makes arguments confidently. Ultimately, the goal is to encourage Christian readers in their pursuit of goodness, truth, and beauty in a world that has rejected all three. Empowering, inspiring, convicting, and thought-provoking, this title would be an excellent read for high school students or adults interested in learning about medieval Christianity, growing their own personal faith, or both. A quick note: the reference to “middle earth” in the title is not related to Tolkien’s fantasy worlds. 217 pages, paperback.

Description
The modern view of the world is empty and lifeless, nothing more than a bunch of matter in motion, with life by the thousandth chance emerging from chaos. The modern world, as a result, can only conceive of progress as more efficiency, more technology, more domination.
In stark contrast to this, Christianity presents a glorious vision for culture, and the vision of a world with truth, beauty, and goodness built into the very molecules of the universe.
Medieval and Protestant Christianity began a conversation about truth, beauty, and goodness, but secularism ended the conversation mid-sentence. Sadly many Christians, while continuing to believe in the Gospel have become just as blind to the beauty of the universe and the need for a culture in which that beauty is recognized and cultivated.
This book sketches a vision of Medieval Protestantism, covering such diverse topics as creeds, poetry, history, the church, feasting, and storytelling as they are to be found in the Christian faith alone.
