Get Set for the Code “B” is the second of three Orton-Gillingham based
preliteracy primers which together (A, B, & C) introduce the consonant
letters, preparing students for Explode the Code workbooks 1-8.
This book “B” focuses on lowercase consonants d, h, j, n, p, and
s (their capitals taught briefly) and their sound-symbol relationships. Cute
black-and-white illustrations are paired with fun activities kids love, such as
matching, tracing, drawing, coloring, saying, and copying letters, pictures,
and their sounds. Lesson pages follow a predictable pattern, allowing children
to work independently much of the time while building foundational reading
skills such as left-to-right tracking, fine motor and hand-eye coordination,
and visual and auditory discrimination. Each lesson does include a 2-page
section of auditory exercises requiring the teacher to read directions from one
side of the student book while the student listens and works on the other side.
For example, “I am thinking of something that tastes good. It has a bun around
it and is fun to eat at a baseball game. What is it?” (Student locates picture
and says “hot dog.”) “Put your finger on the hot dog. What sound does hot
dog begin with? Draw a box around the hot dog." This invaluable training helps kids learn to listen carefully and follow directions. There
