JUMP Math, which stands for Junior Undiscovered Math
Prodigy, is a research-based, mastery-oriented K-8 math program from Canada. It
is focused on building numeracy, which is the ability to reason with numbers
and apply mathematical thinking in real life.
Created by mathematician Dr. John Mighton, JUMP Math
uses a gentle, structured “guided discovery” approach. It breaks complex ideas
into small, manageable steps, builds confidence through incremental success,
and keeps students in the optimal “sweet spot” of challenge (roughly 85%
success, 15% stretch). The program strongly emphasizes mental math,
problem-solving, and conceptual understanding while reducing math anxiety.
Key Program Features
- Structured,
step-by-step lessons that guide students to discover “why” and “how” math
works
- Strong
focus on mental math, problem-solving, and deep numeracy
- Continuous
built-in assessment and immediate feedback
- Effective
for a wide range of learners, including those with gaps or needing extra
confidence
- Clean,
no-frills, black-and-white pages that keep the focus on math (and keep the
price low)
What You Need for Homeschool Use
JUMP Math is a teacher-led program, not an independent workbook
curriculum. For the full experience, most homeschool families use:
- Teacher
Resources (lesson plans, strategies, mental math activities, games,
blackline masters, quizzes, tests, and answer keys): These are provided
free as downloadable PDFs from the JUMP Math website (jumpmath.org).
Simply create a free account to access them.
- Assessment
& Practice Books (.1 and .2 for each grade): Consumable student
books containing practice exercises and ongoing assessment. These have
minimal instructions because the teaching comes from the Teacher
Resources.
Homeschoolers need an annual JUMP Math membership.
The Basic level is free but limited; most families choose the paid Educator or
Pro levels for full access to all materials. One membership covers all grade
levels for your family.
JUMP at Home worksheets are a lighter, more
independent supplement for review or extra practice, but they do not replace
the full guided lessons and Teacher Resources.
JUMP Math is an excellent choice for families who
want a rigorous yet gentle math program that builds strong conceptual
understanding and a positive attitude toward math, all at a very affordable
price.
