The Novel-Ties Study Guide for the novel Helen Keller: Crusader for the Blind and Deaf by Stewart and Polly Anne Graff guides a parent in teaching their child to better understand what they read. At this age, about grades 1-3 or so, tasks will be more conversational. Some students can write their answers, but this is not typically an age group to work independently.
Discuss the questions before reading the assigned passage. Then, read the passage together and go back to the questions. Do you still have the same answers? This process teaches your child how to read with purpose in a way that is interactive and not overwhelming.
We also offer a set that includes the guide and novel.
At this age, completing perhaps 1-2 guides with novels per semester is sufficient. Beginning at about 4th grade, 2-3 per semester is more appropriate since a student can begin to complete work independently.
Pages are reproducible for a single classroom or family. ~Sara
