In the Garden Workbook includes two age-appropriate activity pages that are used with the In the Garden Textbook. One page has an academic activity and the other is a “get outside and explore” activity. A few lessons have additional material pages in the back for kids to cut out and use with their activity page. Household supplies like colored pencils, thin-tipped markers, scissors, glue sticks, and a clip board are needed for the workbook. Required garden items include seeds and/or plant starters, a garden hose and watering cans, pots or cell trays, garden beds or rows for growing plants, compost and organic fertilizer, and gardening tools. The "In the Garden" K–2nd Grade Workbook is a consumable companion workbook to the "In the Garden" Textbook, designed for early elementary students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade. Each of the 30 lessons corresponds directly to a textbook lesson and includes two workbook pages — one academic activity page and one outdoor sensory page — giving younger learners both a structured academic touchpoint and an immediate hands-on experience in the garden.
The first page of each lesson is completed at the table. Activities are designed for early readers and writers and include tasks such as labeling diagrams, coloring illustrations, matching vocabulary words, tracing and copying key terms, answering simple comprehension questions, and completing guided observation prompts. Pages are intentionally simple and low-pressure, building confidence alongside garden knowledge.
The second page of each lesson goes outside. These outdoor pages guide children through a sensory or hands-on activity directly connected to what they just read and practiced — touching soil, observing a plant up close, planting seeds, sketching what they see, or completing a scavenger hunt in the garden. This page is designed to make the concept physical and memorable, anchoring the lesson in real experience rather than just information.
The workbook includes a handful of simple experiments and projects woven throughout the lessons. Activities are designed for the lower elementary developmental stage: short attention spans, early fine motor skills, and a love of sensory exploration are all accounted for.
Supplies needed: pencils, crayons or colored pencils, and access to a garden space (raised bed, container, or backyard plot). Specific lesson supplies are minimal and listed within each lesson.
This workbook is sold separately or as part of the "In the Garden" Bundle. Families with children in multiple grade levels may purchase both the K–2nd and 3rd–5th workbooks to use simultaneously — one textbook read-aloud covers both.
