Household supplies like colored pencils, thin-tipped markers, scissors, glue sticks, and a clip board are needed for the workbook. Required garden items include seeds and/or plant starters, a garden hose and watering cans, pots or cell trays, garden beds or rows for growing plants, compost and organic fertilizer, and gardening tools. A few lessons require additional material listed in the back. Answers to the activity pages are also included in the back. ~ Gina

Description
The "In the Garden" 3rd–5th Grade Workbook is a consumable companion to the "In the Garden" Hardcover Textbook, written for upper elementary students in 3rd through 5th grade. Like its K–2nd counterpart, it follows the same 30-lesson structure - two pages per lesson, one completed at the table and one taken outside - but the content is leveled up for older, more capable students who are ready for greater depth, more complex writing tasks, and increased responsibility in the garden.
The first page of each lesson is an academic worksheet completed at a desk or table. Activities at this level include short-answer and written-response questions, vocabulary definition and application, diagram labeling, observational journaling, note-taking, and concept analysis prompts that ask students to think critically about what they've read. This page is designed to reinforce reading comprehension and introduce academic garden science in an age-appropriate format.
The second page moves the student outside into the garden for a hands-on activity tied directly to the lesson concept. At the 3rd–5th level, these outdoor pages ask students to take on more independent responsibility — conducting a simple experiment, recording observations over time, completing a task solo, or documenting a process with written notes and sketches. The outdoor pages are designed to build genuine competence and a sense of ownership in the garden, not just participation. The workbook is designed to span one growing season at a pace of 1–2 lessons per week, though the self-paced format accommodates any schedule.
Supplies needed: pencils, colored pencils, and access to a garden space. Individual lesson supply needs are clearly noted within each lesson and remain minimal throughout the curriculum.
This workbook is sold separately or as part of the "In the Garden" Bundle. Families teaching siblings across grade levels can purchase both workbook levels and run them alongside a single textbook read-aloud, making this an efficient multi-grade solution for homeschool families.
Looking for a family fun elective or supplement to your science course? In the Garden is a hands-on 30 lesson program that teaches families how to grow their own garden through doing, watching, and trying again. Families learn about types of gardens, veggie layout, soil nutrients, planting seeds, transplants, pest control, and so much more! Program components include a hardcover or softcover textbook option, 2 workbooks (one for grades K-2 and one for grades 3-5), and engaging video instruction with free coaching. These components are sold individually or in packages. Lessons can be done at each family’s pace, usually 2-3 times a week. Flexible enough to be used over the summer, for a semester, or for the whole year – grab your gloves and get ready to explore a whole world waiting beneath the soil! ~ Gina
