As someone who fumbled around trying to create her own nature studies, I would have loved a great resource like The Nature Guide from Brighter Day Press! Written for 30 weekly adventures, each of the 30 lessons includes a supply list, required read aloud, additional reading suggestions, and teaching information. The teaching information is lightly scripted so parents can read the information to their children (or you are welcome to summarize or reword it). Through each lesson, children explore the world around them and journal their discoveries. Parents’ guide them into deeper explorations through reading related books and finding Creator connections through scripture.
Over the course of 30 weeks, children learn the foundations of nature study and how to interact with nature, study various mammals, scavengers, trees, migration, bird watch, the rock cycle and identifying rocks, flowers and gardening, Monarch butterflies, and so much more! While numerous books are recommended for the study, the author encourages you to find a book with the same topic if you are unable to locate a particular title in your library system. Many of these books will also make a delightful addition to your home library! You will also need to supply various field guides or reference books, a nature journal, and various writing and sketching supplies. Binoculars, a pocket microscope, magnifying glass, wooden book stand and watercolor supplies are suggested, along with a few items used during specific weeks like a mason jar, birdseed, an earthworm, etc. Supplies needed are neatly listed at the start of the lesson, making it is easy to gather things prior to the lesson.
