My Pals are Here! Secondary Mathematics 8 Student Book is an advanced Singapore Math curriculum that builds on concepts taught in Secondary Mathematics Grade 7. Aligned with the newest Singapore math syllabus, this course helps students develop a conceptual understanding of math and problem-solving skills. Roughly comparable to a U.S. Algebra 1 course (with integrated geometry and statistics), topics covered include linear equations and inequalities, functions and graphing, systems of equations, exponents, polynomials, introductory quadratic relationships, geometry, coordinate geometry, metric measurement, statistics, and probability.
Each lesson in the full-color student book includes a clear introduction to the new concept with step-by-step explanations and worked (guided) examples. Visual models also help students understand each concept. Practice exercises progress from Basic to Intermediate to Advanced. Students use a four-step problem-solving method: Understand, Plan, Solve, and Check. At the end of each chapter is a summary, a journal activity, a 10-minute concept check to reinforce understanding, and a chapter review. An enrichment activity is also at the end of each chapter. While the book can be consumable, students may want to work out their answers on a separate sheet of paper. Answers (not worked-out solutions) are in the back of the book. Worked-out solutions are found in the teacher resources, which are available in the Teacher’s Guide.
A QR code inside the front cover directs you to MCEduHub, where you can create an account and activate your one-year subscription to the student eBook. It has interactive digital resources (manipulating objects, graphs, diagrams, or values on the screen), and context videos that show how math connects to daily life and highlight the underlying concepts. ~ Gina
