Grammar work continues in this level of Using Language Well Book 5, 2nd edition, with parsing and learning direct and indirect objects. Students will analyze poetry (along with metaphoric language). This year’s lessons begin with a quotation from Charlotte Mason herself: “The habits of the child are, as it were, so many little hammers beating out by slow degrees the character of the man.” Pair that with quotations from Charles Dickens (Nicholas Nickleby), Helen Keller, Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken, and ending with an excerpt (that includes dialogue) from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. While the series’ Christian focus has not changed, this level contains fewer Scriptural quotations than other levels (one Ecclesiastes passage from ESV Scripture). As with other levels in this program, spelling can be tailored by level based on your goals: solidify essentials, encourage steady growth, or challenging. Students will be required to compose three narrations and dictate up to one paragraph weekly. Directions and answers are in the student book; answers and teaching aids are in the teacher book. Consumable, reproducible for single family use. Spiral-bound, consumable, 220 pages, softcover. ~ Ruth

A student should begin Using Language Well, Book 5 when he is comfortable with reading and handwriting at about a seventh-grade level.
This level of Using Language Well, Book 5, 2nd edition is designed for students who are comfortable reading and composing at about a 7th-grade level. A placement test is available for help in assigning your student to a level. Students will complete two lessons weekly, each taking about 15-20 minutes. As with each level in this series, students will review and build upon previously taught skills and be introduced to more. For example, in Level 4, students focused on compound verbs, prepositional phrases, interjections, antecedents, simple subjects, and predicates. In Level 5, students will review the grammar skills while parsing sentences and begin analyzing them. Spelling will continue to be drawn from the literary passages, with the flexibility of three different learning levels. Students will be expected to dictate up to one paragraph and complete 3 written narrations weekly. Instruction will include figures of speech, similes, and metaphors. Rubrics for progressing writers based on a ten-point per topic scale and will help direct your student more carefully. Directions are in the student book; answers and teaching aids are in the teacher book. A convenient package of these two components is available. See individual component descriptions for sample pages and more specific information. ~ Ruth
