Description

In Using Language Well Book 1, students complete two mostly oral lessons weekly (5-10 minutes each). Students and parents work together in lessons. First, read the selected sentence and then together you’ll discuss the day’s question and typically transcribe the sentence in their best handwriting. The course begins with shorter quotations such as the proverb, “Marry in haste; repent at leisure.” By the end of the course, passages will be more challenging, such as the poem, “Pippa’s Song” by Robert Browning or a 5-lined excerpt from Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Writing lines are large (3/4 inch) and provide plenty of space. The student will end each lesson with a final, brief exercise (writing a couple words from the selection from memory). Use this consumable alongside the Book 1 Teacher. Space for writing words from memory is provided in the back of this student book. Attached to the book cover, a bookmark style flap reminds the student how to study a word and provides key questions to ask and steps for learning words. Student book is reproducible for students in immediate household. 107 pgs, spiral-bound, softcover. ~ Ruth

Category Description for Using Language Well Book 1

Using Language Well Level 1 is a perfect place to start in learning composition skills using a Charlotte Mason approach. Students will study English usage, mechanics, and spelling by engaging with quotations from authors. The course begins with shorter quotations such as the proverb, “Marry in haste; repent at leisure.” Lessons at the end of the year will be more challenging, such as “Pippa’s Song” by Robert Browning or a 5-lined excerpt from Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This level emphasizes narration (as an oral form of composition). To take this course, students should feel comfortable writing and reading at about grade 3 level (a placement test is available). Most of the student’s work in this level will be oral, with some transcription of individual words. Students will also practice using a dictionary, and working with plurals, possessives, rhyming, spelling, types of questions, and capitalization. They will also be introduced to the use of semicolons, apostrophes, and quotation marks. Both the teacher and consumable student books should be used together. Directions are in the student book; answers and teaching aids are in the teacher book. ~ Ruth
