Description

Journey through Alaska’s history to the places where the stories unfold! This one-semester course, taught by a professor who’s on-location in Alaska and around the world, brings the past to life through multisensory lessons packed with engaging audio, video, and text.

Covering Alaska from pre-Columbian peoples to the present, students explore the past from multiple angles, developing tools to think like historians. The semester is divided into 4 units as follows:

  • Origins and Native Cultures
  • Colonial and Early U.S. Alaska
  • Gold Rushes, Governance, and War
  • Oil, Rights, and Modern Identity

With 8 months of access to the course, students can work at their own pace – using the illustrated text, audio recordings for each session, digital (and printable) guided notes, digital flashcards, and self-graded quizzes with feedback.

This 16-session course (1 session/week) revolves around guiding questions that are answered in one of four engaging ways:

  • On-Location Videos – Filmed across Alaska–from Skagway to Prudhoe Bay–key historical events are introduced where they actually happened.
  • Document Lessons – Students explore primary and secondary sources to develop their own judgments in response to key questions that get at the heart of the state’s history.
  • Primary Source Readings – Letters, newspaper clippings, and archival materials are embedded into the course to broaden students’ perspectives.
  • Narrative Lessons – Thorough, engaging, and organized, the course text provides an ongoing backbone to frame each lesson and keep students on track.

Each session includes guided notes handouts, helping students identify key takeaways, organize their thoughts, and practice critical inquiry.

The Nomadic Professor online history program uses an immersive and story-driven approach to teach history. Students will follow the Nomadic Professor from setting to setting as they learn about the history that took place there and learn to think critically, analyze primary sources, and communicate effectively. Each course bundle offers a full year of history in a completely online platform that’s well-organized and easy to navigate for students and parents alike. The multi-sensory approach caters to all learning styles. Engaging text is filled with colorful photos and timelines, and audio recordings (available for each lesson) are a huge win for students with dyslexia or those who enjoy listening to lessons. On-location video clips embedded throughout the text offer stunning visuals around the globe and bring historical settings to life. 

In addition, hands-on activities are suggested to deepen understanding. Guided Notes (for print or download) can be filled in as students read, flashcards help review vocabulary, and daily online quizzes (automatically graded) provide accountability and help students retain key concepts. 20 lessons in each course are devoted solely to analyzing source documents. A variety of writing assignments are offered throughout. Answer Keys & Rubrics are provided for all assignments. Each course has about 100 sessions that can be completed in roughly 60–90 minutes each. Students can choose basic or more advanced tracks to follow for additional elective credit and AP or CLEP test preparation.
