This lecture and primary source-based course spans from Meso-America and early explorers, to the American colonies and the development of the United States through the Civil War. The course then ends with the topic of Western expansion and highlights individuals such as Theodore Roosevelt and Booker T. Washington (for US history after this time period, consider the Modernity course). Projects include an American map project of the student's choice (from the time period of 1492-1800); a costumed speech project; research paper; a personally crafted project (requiring 30-40 hours); and a year-long portfolio compiled of work from each lesson. Course requires lectures (8 DVD set), Student Reader (336 pgs), and the Teacher's Guide. It also suggests supplemental readings to reinforce topics.
