This student worktext is a self-directing tool for students who wish to craft stronger, better-written sentences. Starting briefly with basic sentence construction (subjects/predicates and fragments), the text then uses example sentences from published authors to teach, by imitation, jobs that sentences accomplish: extending meaning, identifying, describing, elaborating and combining these 4 skills in various ways. Open-ended activities provide students with practice. The provided example sentences are typically pulled from modern authors such as Stephen King, Garrison Keillor, R.K. Rowling, James Joyce and Harper Lee. While not the primary focus, the text also uses a scaffolding technique to help students learn potentially new vocabulary found in these examples.
