From Handwriting Without Tears, this book can be the next in the series after Can Do Cursive or it can be a cursive option for a middle schooler without much experience with cursive handwriting. Many students will be able to work through the student book on their own, but for those who need explicit instruction, the Teacher Edition (sku 048056) has guidance for every student page. The Student Edition begins with a review of forming and connecting cursive letters. Letters are grouped by shape and stroke. The HWOT cursive font is quite vertical – making it a left-handed-friendly option. This gives it a different look from a traditional slanted cursive, but remember that students are practicing form. Individuals are expected to develop their own cursive style later on. pages provide opportunities to copy words, sentences, then write original paragraphs using the guidance provided. I love that students will practice their signature! Pages then become themed around Greek and Latin word families. The variety of topics keeps kids interested and leads the writer to produce more sentences of their own. Not reproducible, 86pp, 1cm lines (no midlines). ~Sara

Description
Children develop speed and fluency with cursive lowercase and capital letter formations. Activities reinforce morphology to prepare students for increased reading and writing demands across content areas. Students write poetry, diary and journal notes, book reviews and thank you notes. Cursive and Beyond can be used in grade 5, grade 6, or even in middle school based on instructional needs. The Cursive and Beyond student edition also includes:
- Step-by-step letter formations that are easy to teach.
- Vertical cursive style that is easy to read and write.
- Left-friendly design with perfect letter models.
- Pause and Practice pages for progress monitoring.
Over the first 6 weeks, students review letters grouped together by formation by immediately using them in words. They practice applying these words in capitals, sentences, and paragraphs. “Pause and Practice” sections happen every ten or so pages, where students will “translate” the provided print paragraph into their own cursive. Students will then work on writing fluency, aiming for “fast and neat” handwriting. All handwriting is practiced in context and some particularly fun topics include developing their own signature, learning Greek and Latin roots, and tackling unique paragraph-length writing assignments. Aligns with Science of Reading.
