The Sainte-Mère-Église Church in Normandy, France, is one of the most famous historic landmarks from the D-Day operation that took place on June 6th, 1944. During the invasion, US Army Paratrooper Private John Steele of the 82nd Airborne Division found himself stranded on the roof the church after attempting to land in the town of Sainte-Mère-Église in the middle of the night. Injured and unable to free himself from the church’s tower pinnacle, John hung from his parachute for two hours as intense fighting occurred around him. He was later captured by the Germans before escaping back to his battalion.
To commemorate the crucial role that the American paratroopers played in liberating France from the Germans, the locals of Sainte-Mère-Église continue to hang a figure of John Steele from the church tower to this day. Having visited this church and the town of Sainte-Mère-Église myself, it is truly a beautiful place that serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of D-Day and the sacrifices that were made by thousands of military servicemen.
COBI offers you the ability to recreate this special landmark with this 2,280 piece set, complete with a John Steele minifigure hanging from the church and a roof that can be removed to reveal the church’s interior.
