I often tell parents to introduce a foreign language to their children with songs. It gives kids a chance to hear and practice sounds that are new to them. Initially, they really don't have to understand anything, but with practice, the pieces fall into place and years later they remember something they sang as a child. Think of all the songs you learned when you were a kid and still recall without effort. The main focus is on imitating what they hear. Authentic speakers give your student a good model to follow, which is especially important if this is the first exposure to the language. Singer Lynn Veronneau is from Quebec and has a lovely, clear voice that is easy to understand. Guitar and other instruments accompany the 15 songs that are not too young for older students, but fun and danceable for little ones. Included is a booklet of the lyrics in French with some of the vocabulary defined on the side. Some songs are quite simple while others have a lot more words. Depending on the age and experience of your student, you can use these songs to demonstrate commands, prepositions, questions, negatives and other grammatical points. You can type out the lyrics, leave a space where some words should be, have students listen to the song and fill in the words as they hear them. Maybe one time you take out all of the verbs, and another time you remove articles or adjectives. There is a lot of vocabulary such as the months, numbers, vowels, seasons, weekdays, fruit and more. You can use the vocabulary to practice around the house and reinforce what your child is learning. I loved hearing the familiar Sur le Pont d'Avignon, but this CD also includes zesty arrangements of beloved traditional songs like B-i-n-g-o, Les lphants, and Tombe La Pluie. The fun Latin beats may not be what you expect from a French language, but you can't help but bob your head and tap your foot as your kids practice their French! ~ Sara
