Description

This award-winning and heart-wrenching sequel to Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry offers readers more than a glimpse into life in the South for a Black family in the 1930s. In the midst of extreme injustice and prejudice as the result of systematic racism, the Logan family bands together, supporting each other and fighting for what’s right even in the face of tremendous opposition. Narrated from the perspective of 10-year-old Cassie, this historical fiction masterpiece is captivating, beautifully written, endearing, and educational. Students will appreciate this book best when read alongside a parent or teacher who can offer guidance and/or space for discussion; although written appropriately for young readers, the author does not sugarcoat the reality of what life was like during this period for Black individuals, and some content is reasonably disturbing—as it should be. A young Black man is unjustly tried against an all-white jury; a young woman of mixed-race experiences intense humiliation for trying to pass for white; a Black woman is faced with opposition for trying to register to vote; and more. Please also note that, as this story takes place in the South during the 1930s, there are instances of offensive language, including racial slurs. Despite these tragedies, the Logans’ strength of character and family unity is emphasized, making them role models for us in how to stand strong and hold on to integrity even when nothing is fair and the odds are stacked against them. This book will doubtlessly provide many prompts for important discussions around race, justice, equality, and more. If you fall in love with the Logan family (which is extremely likely), there are many more in the series to explore! 419 pgs, pb.

Publisher's Description of Let the Circle Be Unbroken
It is a frightening and turbulent time for the Logan family. First, their friend T.J. must go on trial for murder–and confront an all-white jury. Then, Cousin Suzella tries to pass for white, with humiliating consequences. And when Cassie’s neighbor, Mrs. Lee Annie, stands up for her right to vote, she and her family are driven from their home. Other neighbors are destroyed and shattered by the greed of landowners. But through it all, Cassie and the Logans stand together and stand proud–proving that courage, love, and understanding can defy even the deepest prejudice.
