Category Description for Catan Games & Expansions

Catan, formerly The Settlers of Catan, is the perfect blend of strategy and luck. What really makes this game unique is that the game board is different every time you play which keeps the game fresh and the strategy ever-changing. The primary contention in the game comes from settling around various resource tiles. Each tile on the board represents one of five different resources. Number tokens, ranging from 2-12, are placed on each tile. The game begins with an initial settlement phase, where each player gets to place two settlements on the corners of the resource hexagons. Any player who has settled on a tile whose number is rolled receives resources.

Each player’s turn typically consists of three phases:

  1. Rolling the dice to produce resources
  2. Trading for needed resources
  3. Building using the resource cards

The object of the game is to be the first player to reach 10 points, which are accumulated through developments like settlements, cities, roads, armies, etc. There are many different routes to victory, and those who conquer them will successfully settle the isle of Catan. For 3-4 players, with game extensions allowing for up to 2 additional players. Game time is approximately 60 minutes. Expansion sets require Catan: The Game to play.
