Description

All About Math Level 1 Materials includes the Teacher’s Manual and Student Packet. The Teacher’s Manual has 60 scripted lessons that are designed to be spread out over a couple of days since the publisher recommends spending around 20 minutes a day teaching math. The Student Packet includes Hop Into Math Activity Book, Brinda’s Math Tools (number cards, dot cards, 10-frame, and more), and themed stickers. Activities might incorporate games, drawing, cutting and pasting, or completing a worksheet. Brinda’s Math Fun activities provide even more games for students to apply what they have learned.

Level 1 includes some concepts covered in kindergarten and first grade. Some topics in this level involve learning how to subitize, teaching simple addition and subtraction, comparing numbers, finding the missing number, understanding less than and greater than, ordering two-digit numbers and comparing, adding two-digit numbers with base 10 blocks and drawings.

Students gain a lot of conceptual knowledge and mental math in this level; however, the scope and sequence is somewhat narrower than other early math programs. For example, there are no lessons on shape, time, money, weight and capacity, but Level 1 instead focuses on understanding the number system so children can easily grasp other concepts later. There is also no practice learning how to write numbers; although, most handwriting programs will teach number formation.

One manipulative kit for all grade levels is available to purchase separately. Students also need a small dry erase board with markers. ~ Gina

Category Description for All About Math

All About Math is a new homeschool math program that is designed to take the struggle out of math! This curriculum from All About Learning Press features open-and-go, multisensory, 20-minute lessons that use a mastery approach. The strategies in All About Math are the same as those found in the publisher's other two programs: All About Reading and All About Spelling. Levels 1 and 2 are available now, while Levels 3-5 will be available next year. Because of the mastery approach, the levels do not necessarily correspond with grade levels. Level 1 includes concepts covered in kindergarten and part of first grade. Level 2 will incorporate first grade and part of second grade. Level 3 will mainly be third grade material, Level 4 generally covers fourth grade material, and Level 5 primarily teaches fifth grade concepts.

The topics covered in All About Math really strive to develop a strong number sense in young students and a solid understanding of the base ten system. Five “Show What You Know!” lessons review and practice the new concepts taught in previous lessons. A Daily Review Tracker records skills learned, ensuring that students master foundational concepts before moving on. Students verbalize their thinking with some guided questions in the Math Reflection section of each lesson. Lessons take multiple days to complete and are organized into the following 6 parts:

  • Before you Begin gives the teacher an overview of the lesson and a list of materials needed.
  • Review allows students to review previously learned concepts so they will be ready for new learning.
  • New Teaching is interactive as the teacher presents the new concept using a scripted text and students use manipulatives and activity sheets to develop a deeper understanding.
  • Extended Practice provides optional activities for students who need more practice.
  • Brinda’s Math Fun are engaging games and activities designed for students to play more than once to practice their math skills.
  • Track Your Progress is a fun way for students to keep track of what they have mastered.

Components include a teacher’s manual and student packet. The Teacher’s Manual includes scripted lessons with daily review. The Student Packet includes an activity book, themed stickers, and additional math tools to support learning (number cards, dot cards, 10-frame, and more). One manipulative kit for all grade levels is available to purchase separately. Students also need a small dry erase board with markers for demonstrating concepts. A placement test is available to ensure students are ready to begin All About Math.
