This DIVE Self-Paced Earth Science Course by Dr. Shormann is biblically based, independent, and typically recommended for junior high, though it’s easily modified for a high school credit.
Unlike other DIVE self-paced science courses, this one has no required Textbook or reading assignments. There are 56 Video Lectures total (featuring colorful pictures and graphics), which provide two 20-minute lectures per week. These have all the required information, which is always reinforced through digital worksheets and flashcards. Optional fill-in-the-blank lecture notes can be printed off as well.
There is also a 30-minute Lab video each week with printable lab manual pages (worksheets and lab exercises) and correlating video solutions to ensure understanding. For those working out the labs in person, a lab kit from Nature’s Workshop, which includes most of the needed materials, is available here.
The digital platform is user-friendly—assignments are clearly organized with links embedded for efficiency. Although the course is set up on a 32-week schedule, it is flexible and self-paced. For an honors course, plan about 1.5 hours per day, 4-5 days per week. For a standard course, 4 days per week for an hour a day.
Each lesson consists of several parts:
- Expert video lectures
- Digital flashcards with quiz features for learning definitions
- Interactive lesson reviews
- Weekly quizzes & quarterly exams
- Auto graded/recorded assignments
- Virtual Lab videos
- Printable Lab Manual
- Step-by-step video Solutions to ensure understanding
The Teacher Guide included has a “Getting Started” video, info on using the course for honors or standard credit, information on grading, an online gradebook, recommended additional reading, and more. Access is for 1 student for 12 months, but deeply discounted sibling subscriptions can be purchased directly from the company at any time after (time extensions on courses are also very reasonably priced!).
Students should be taking Pre-Algebra or higher in math. This course can be modified for high school credit by giving quarterly reviews as exams and adding quarterly reports on related topics.
