Publisher's Description of COBI Nativity Scene - 381 pieces
A nativity scene is a traditional decoration associated with the celebration of Christmas, which presents the scene of the birth of Jesus Christ. Nativity scenes come in various forms, from simple, home-made models to elaborate and artistically made installations. Their purpose is to remind the faithful of the biblical story of Jesus' birth in Bethlehem. The tradition of creating nativity scenes dates back to the Middle Ages. Its beginnings are often considered to be the work of St. Francis of Assisi, who in 1223 in Greccio, Italy, created a living nativity scene, recreating the scene of Jesus' birth with the participation of people and animals. In this way, he wanted to better bring people closer to the mystery of the divine birth. Shortly after this, nativity scenes began to appear throughout Europe, initially in monasteries, and later also in churches and private homes.

A traditional nativity scene contains figures representing the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Angels, shepherds, the Three Kings (Wise Men from the East), as well as animals such as oxen, donkeys or sheep are also generally included. In the central point of the nativity scene there is a small manger, in which the newborn Jesus lies. The entire scene is placed in a stable or cave.

The COBI nativity scene does not lack the most characteristic elements of a traditional stable. The inspiring structure consisting of 370 elements contains a lot of interesting plants, including ivy growing on the wall and a palm tree growing nearby. Above the small structure there is a star of Bethlehem directing the wise men from the East. In their hands they hold gifts that they will give to the newborn Christ. Animals circle around including an ox, a sheep and a donkey. In the stable itself there is the holy family: Joseph, Mary and Jesus.
