Romeo and Juliet (Folger Shakespeare Library)
Romeo and Juliet have a forbidden love, as they are families are on opposite sides of a feud. If their love is discovered, they may well be killed. Love goes to great lengths, however, even unto death. This edition claims to be “…the best early version of a particular play." Although, not exact to the earliest version, this book takes note of changes that have been made. In addition to the storyline of the play, the front portion of this book includes a brief history of Shakespeare's life, language, and theater. On each two-page spread of the play script, one page features explanations and definitions from the scenes, while the adjacent page contains the script. The last several pages of the book hold an index of famous quotes from the play. There are also many pictures and drawings throughout the story and script from rare books in the Folger Shakespeare Library. Note: Several of the images and drawings show nude or partially nude characters.
In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare creates a violent world, in which two young people fall in love. It is not simply that their families disapprove; the Montagues and the Capulets are engaged in a blood feud.
In this death-filled setting, the movement from love at first sight to the lovers' final union in death seems almost inevitable. And yet, this play set in an extraordinary world has become the quintessential story of young love. In part because of its exquisite language, it is easy to respond as if it were about all young lovers.
The authoritative edition of Romeo and Juliet from The Folger Shakespeare Library, the trusted and widely used Shakespeare series for students and general readers, includes:

An absolute gem for 21st century Shakespeare readers! 400 years has brought many changes to life and language… Some words are no longer used while others have completely different meanings now. These books allow you to enjoy Shakespeare plays without the headache of deciphering so much! Clear, easy-to-understand notes, definitions, and summaries help readers to understand antiquated words and phrases, as well as cultural context and nuances of the characters and story. I love the side-by-side layout. Each page of the play script is adjacent to a page featuring explanations, scene-by-scene plot summaries, and illustrations of the scenes from rare books.
