Victorian novelist G. A. Henry treats young readers to a
Christian historical fiction tale called The Dragon and the Raven,
first published in 1886. This Generations Timeless Classics edition of this tale
taking place in 9th century England is a story of kingdoms, kings,
knights, and everyday people that weaves historical facts with fictional
narrative. Scenes of great battles, deep heartache, harrowing naval adventures,
and heroic rescues await the reader. A wonderful preface from the author sets
the scene and sheds light on the importance of learning about King Alfred’s
life and reign. Knowing King Alfred teaches what it means to be prudent,
patient, learned, brave, wise, pious, and devoted—all traits I believe we want
to see in our children today! Unfamiliar words are defined in footnotes
throughout. Enjoy a free Discussion

Publisher's Description of The Dragon and the Raven by G.A. Henty (Generations Timeless Classics)
The Danes have invaded Great Britain. Kingdom after kingdom has fallen
to sword and plunder. Who will stand against the pagan Viking hordes?
Join Edmund and King Alfred, known to history as Alfred the Great, as
they defend the kingdom of Wessex and fight for the freedom they so
desperately desire. Across land and sea, the battle rages. Will Alfred's
small forces be victorious against the onslaught of his powerful
enemies? Both Edmund and King Alfred recognize that victory belongs to
the Lord. It is only through the help of Almighty God that they will
emerge victorious. In this classic novel by Victorian author G. A. Henty
(1832-1902), readers are introduced to the sights, sounds, and events
of 9th century England. Weaving the true story of King Alfred with the
fictitious narrative of Edmund, a young Saxon thane, this work of
historical fiction offers a thrilling introduction to the life and times
of King Alfred the Great and is sure to capture the imagination of
young readers for generations to come.
Written to teach children about the providence of God in
history, the Generations History courses offer homeschool families an open-and-go
option that is engaging to readers and easy to use. Beginning in kindergarten, My
1st History shows children that God calls people for His purpose
and glory. Through the 34 stories, children will be introduced to some of these
amazing men and women from biblical times through the 20th century. Following
the readings, My 1st History includes short discussion
questions on the story. Church History is introduced in the grade 1 course,
which also lays the foundation for the courses that follow. Once the foundation
is laid, the subsequent courses teach geography and Christian history across
the continents. Along with the Textbook, a companion Activity Book (grade 1) or
Workbook (grades 2–6) is recommended. In grade 1, the Activity Book is full-color,
while the other grade-level Workbooks are black and white. Activities vary and
may include coloring pages, mapping exercises, Scripture writing, prayer
points, enrichment activities, and special projects. The consumable
Activity/Workbooks are not reproducible. Sets include the Textbook and the
corresponding Activity Book or Workbook.
