Having a background in the medical field, I found myself perusing this book with an eye focused on details - How accurate is the information? How easily would it be understood by the average reader especially in the sections detailing common disorders? How straightforward is it to navigate as a learning resource? All I can say is WOW! This book does indeed exceed all expectations. The Human Body beautifully illustrates the internal human body through the use of 3D images, computed tomography (CT scan) images, microscopic image photography, PET scan images and color illustrations.
It is organized into thirteen chapters which include the integrated body; skeletal system; muscular system; nervous system; endocrine system; cardiovascular system; respiratory system; skin, hair and nails; lymph and immunity; digestive system; urinary system; reproduction and birth; and growth and development. Each chapter is further structured into the anatomy, the physiology, and a discussion of common disorders for each body system. These are well organized and use the correct terminology explained accurately and clearly. The back of the book also contains a ten-page glossary of terms to further explain the terms or for quick reference. The authors have given a great depth of information in an easy to understand manner, and because of this I feel this book would be a valuable asset to anyone with an interest in learning more about our human body, how it functions and the disorders that affect mankind.
Please note: Dorling Kindersly is not a Christian publisher, and there are (naturally) images of male and female body systems and a discussion of sexually transmitted infections. Overall, this is done tastefully with a focus on the structure and function of the human body. ~ Deanne
