Description

Eleven chapters focus on eleven geography topics, covering the atmosphere, continents, oceans, seasons, climate, weather, structure of Earth, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, and latitude and longitude. Presenting basic information like ocean currents, the rotation of the earth, and plate tectonics to children in an exciting way isn’t an easy task, but the author has done an impressive job, taking great pains to offer the information in a way children will understand and appreciate. Scattered throughout the readings are narration prompts called “Memory Joggers.” These narrations jog kids' memories about what they have read so far and helps them to remember by describing it in their own words. If you are familiar with the previous edition, you will notice that many of the readings are the same. Visually and organizationally, there are notable differences in this Master Book revised edition. Activity pages vary, from simple drawing or coloring pages and short answer/fill-in-the-blank questions to word searches and hands-on projects. Some of the hands-on activities include mapping the location of shoes found washed up on shore (after containers of them were lost at sea), investigating ocean currents, making an edible earth, identifying rocks, doing an “earth dance”, making volcanoes, and much more! These activities have clearly not been “tacked on” just because they are related to the chapter’s topic; they were intentionally chosen to be something that kids will enjoy. Also included are prayer prompts and song lyrics from traditional hymns or songs. If a song is unknown to your family, it will be easy to find the tune online. The back of the book includes Scripture-based copywork pages, chapter reviews, semester exams, answer keys, a glossary, and maps. The KJV is used, but families can easily use their preferred version of Scripture. Activity pages are reproducible for your immediate family. Recommended resources include the New Ocean Book and Map Trek. Projects use common household items. What a fun and appealing way to study world geography as a family! 400 pgs., paperback.  ~ Jess/Deanne
