More settlers are arriving in the city! In addition to Townsfolk Cards, there are now Outsider Cards that can be added to a player’s draw pile. These cards provide additional benefits during the game or opportunities to earn additional victory points at the end of the game. Also new are manuscript player boards. These boards help organize manuscripts and add action options. Some options include the ability to substitute a resource for a coin and a permanent option to gain King’s Order cards which are needed to add the new Outsider Cards to a player deck. Finally, there are options for additional victory points with the new specialized builder cards and new Castle Leader Card bonuses. I added both this expansion and the Keeper of Keys to the Viscounts of the West Kingdom game and really enjoyed all of the additional options and actions. While most are traders and laborers, eager to make a home for themselves, others seem to have more devious intentions. Can we really trust those who once attacked our walls? Do they truly desire peace? The King has sent his orders, but we will decide who may stay and who must leave.

Issued in 2020, this game is the third of the West Kingdom Series published by Garphill Games and wraps up this trilogy. It takes place in 980 AD, which was a medieval time, using a fictional scenario loosely based on the Frankish empire. The scene is set with a storyline that plays out during a period of the king’s decline, with poverty and unrest causing his subjects to have distrust in his ability to rule effectively. We play this game as Viscounts, who are trying to use their wisdom to help the kingdom move through this period by pleasing the people of the land while remaining loyal to the king.
In this 1-4 player game, our goals align with its theme as we gain victory points while we work on the castle, build structures, and transcribe manuscripts that hold knowledge, while trying to keep the kingdom solvent. Successfully performing these tasks will help keep our citizens informed and strong and hopefully help us earn enough points to win the game!
Other games in the West Kingdom trilogy include Architects of the West Kingdom and Paladins of the West Kingdom. Viscounts is in the middle of these two with regard to complexity. It has a solo mode, and its two expansions, Gates of Gold and Keepers of Keys, add variety and new challenges. I highly recommend the entire West Kingdom series! ~ Marsha
