Friendly Chemistry covers the same topics taught in traditional high school chemistry courses. The course begins with an introduction to atomic theory followed by discussion of why the elements are arranged the way they are in the periodic table. Next comes a discussion of how atoms become charged (ionization), followed by an explanation of how charged atoms make compounds. The mole is introduced next, followed by a discussion of chemical reactions. Stoichiometry (predicting amounts of product produced from a reaction) is treated next followed by a discussion of solutions (molarity). The course is wrapped up with a discussion of the ideal gas laws.

Part of what makes Friendly Chemistry, “friendly” is that the required components are “just enough” without being overwhelming. Along with the easy-to-understand explanations, the black and white illustrations and examples are minimalistic, making the pages helpful without being overwhelming. Of course, the program becomes even more friendly when you add on any (or all) of the supplemental resources.
Required components include the Student Book, 2-volume Friendly Chemistry Teacher Edition (Choose either the Homeschool or the Classroom Version), and the Friendly Chemistry Manipulative Set. You will also need to supply the household items for the hands-on lab activities. The Teacher Editions are available individually or in a set. The Friendly Chemistry Essential Set provides all of the required components: the Homeschool Teacher Edition (Volume 1 and 2), Student Book, and Manipulative Set. Worth mentioning, it would be possible to do the course just using the Teacher Edition (Vol. 1 and 2) and Manipulative Set, since the Teacher Edition volumes include the full text and worksheets included in the Student Book, along with the teaching information and answers.
