The Definitive Edition of Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl is an expanded edition of the originally published diary from Anne’s years spent in hiding. Reading this text, you will witness the growing-up and maturing of a young girl into a young woman, all done in secrecy. This is not the original book that Anne’s father, Otto, published in 1947. Out of respect for Anne and the customs of the time many entries were removed for the first publication. These entries mainly dealt with human anatomy and physiology, Anne’s changing body, and sexuality. In 1983, the Anne Frank Foundation combined the two versions that Anne wrote in the annex, into one volume—including many of the entries that Otto had intentionally excluded to preserve the memory and reputation of Anne and the other individuals in the annex. Then again, in 1998, the 5 pages, that were entrusted to a family friend, were added to the published version of this book. This journal has had a long history of editorial work and can be controversial in content for some families. Parents, please read before handing to your younger readers. 385 pages, softcover. ~Rebecca

Description
Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank's remarkable diary has since become a world classic—a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit.
In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the "Secret Annex" of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and amusing, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short.
