Product Overview

  • Covers all strands of science: chemistry, biology, physics, geology, astronomy
  • The text is written in a straightforward, easy-to-understand format with vivid illustrations
  • Student Pages and Teacher Pages add hands-on activities and support to help students understand key science concepts
  • Presents the same concepts in Level 1, but in greater depth and higher reading level

Description

Real Science-4-Kids Book 5 gives an introduction of science along with a basic understanding of chemistry, biology, physics, geology, and astronomy (in this order). The concepts at this level spiral back to the concepts in Book 1 only on a more in-depth level. Reading level of the text is around grade 6; therefore, if your child is reading the text independently, he/she should at least be reading at a 6th grade level.  However, if you are reading the text with your child, Book 5 can be used in grade 5. Some topics covered in each category include:

  • Introduction to Science – History and philosophy of science, scientific method, interpreting scientific data
  • Chemistry – History of matter, the alchemists, atoms, using the periodic table, chemical bonds, chemical reactions
  • Biology – Study of life, Greek philosophers, taxonomy, chemistry of life, cells and division of cells, viruses, bacteria, and archaea
  • Physics – Law of physics, force, energy, work, types of energy, conservation of energy, the energy we use, introduction of math equations relating to physics
  • Geology – Physical and historical geology, rocks, minerals and soils, soil taxonomy, earth’s layers, plate tectonics, mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes
  • Astronomy – What is astronomy, earth’s home in space, the moon and the sun, planets
  • Conclusion – Science in the public, science in the movies, real scientists

The text is presented in an organized and understandable format with engaging illustrations so students can better comprehend complex science topics. A summary is included at the end of each chapter. Hardcover, 220 pgs. ~ Gina

Publisher's Description of Real Science 4 Kids - Book 5

Science Book 5 is the first volume in the Real Science-4-Kids Middle School Series, and it sets the stage for a deeper, more rigorous exploration of real science—starting exactly where it should: with atoms.

Unlike traditional programs that postpone core concepts, RS4K uses an atoms-first learning progression to introduce students to the real building blocks of science right away. Students begin with atomic theory, chemical bonding, and molecular structure, then spiral outward into biology, physics, geology, and astronomy with increasing depth. This approach empowers students to think critically, make connections across disciplines, and develop a strong conceptual foundation that prepares them for high school and college-level science, especially Chemistry 1.

With 22 chapters across five major disciplines, this year-long curriculum combines scientific modeling, hands-on thinking, and real-world relevance to help learners understand science—not just memorize it.

What Students Learn:

  • Chemistry: Atomic theory, chemical bonding, and reaction types—presented through models that clarify how atoms interact to form new substances.
  • Biology: The chemistry of life, including biomolecules, metabolism, cell types, and viruses, with an emphasis on structure and function.
  • Physics: The nature of force, work, and energy—plus how energy is stored, transferred, and conserved in real-world systems.
  • Geology: Earth's structure, including its layers, rocks, minerals, and plate tectonics, as well as how we interpret geological data.
  • Astronomy: Planetary motion, the role of the sun and moon, and how scientists develop and revise models of the cosmos.

Category Description for Real Science 4 Kids Curriculum

Real Science 4 Kids Science is the newest science program from Gravitas Publications. Similar in content to Exploring the Building Blocks of Science, the author introduces chemistry first, followed by biology, physics, geology, and astronomy. The beautiful hardcover textbook presents complex science concepts in a way kids will understand. Textbooks are written at a slightly advanced reading level so parents should be reading the text with the student if using the books corresponding to the grade level - unless the student can read and comprehend the text independently. Throughout the textbook are engaging illustrations, chapter summaries, and pronunciation for science vocabulary.

Student and teacher pages are available separately. Student pages include a study notebook with fun activities to go with each chapter and hands-on labs that correlate with specific chapters. Some of the activity pages require students to cut and glue to make a layered mini book. Teacher pages include lesson plans, mid-term and final quizzes, and answers to the student notebook. A Digital Library subscription is also available, which gives you access to all grade levels of texts, PDF student and teacher resources, and a full Science Library of early readers for science.
