Classical
A methodology based on the Latin Trivium (three stages of learning), including the grammar stage (memorization and facts), logic stage (critical thinking), and rhetoric stage (developing/defending ideas).
Unit Study
A thematic or topical approach centered around one topic that integrates multiple subject areas.
Montessori (Discovery)
A methodology based on the work of a 20th century educator that emphasizes student and sensory-driven discovery learning and real-life applications.

Description

Real Science-4-Kids Book 4 teaches the five branches of science including chemistry, biology, physics, geology, and astronomy. Reading level of the text is around grade 6; therefore, if your child is reading the text independently, he/she should at least be reading at a 6th grade level. However, if you are reading the text with your child, Book 1 can be used in grade 4.  Some concepts include:

  • Introduction – Discoveries in chemistry, biology, physics, geology, and astronomy
  • Chemistry – Atoms, protons, neutrons, electrons, solids, liquids, and gases, chemical reactions, thermodynamics
  • Biology – Herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores, invertebrates, sponges, sea jellies, worms, mollusks, echinoderms, arthropods, arachnids, vertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals
  • Physics – Different types of waves, sound, light, photons, reflection, refraction
  • Geology – Atmospheric cycle, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, ecology, natural resources, pollution, greenhouse effect
  • Astronomy – Rockets, space travel, measuring the distance of stars, radio telescopes, life in our solar system, future of space travel
  • Conclusion – summary of amazing discoveries, famous scientists, Nobel Prize

Information is presented and organized in an understandable format with lots of engaging illustrations. A summary is included at the end of each chapter. Hardcover, 217 pgs. ~ Gina

Publisher's Description of Real Science 4 Kids - Book 4

The capstone of the elementary science series, building on the knowledge, skills, and curiosity nurtured in the previous volumes. With 22 thoughtfully sequenced chapters spanning chemistry, biology, physics, geology, and astronomy, this book invites learners into more advanced territory—where atomic theory meets ecology, and sound waves meet space exploration.

From bonding electrons and states of matter to energy cycles and environmental science, Science Book 4 blends deeper content with the same clear, engaging format that defines the RS4K approach. This volume introduces more abstract concepts like wave behavior, light refraction, ecological systems, and the search for life in the universe, helping students think like real scientists and connect science to the world around them.

Students will explore:

  • Chemistry: Electron behavior in bonds, heat transfer, chemical states, and reaction speeds.
  • Biology: Animal classification, from squishy invertebrates to furry mammals—with a strong focus on body plans and adaptation.
  • Physics: Waves, sound, and light—including how photons work, how colors form, and how mirrors and lenses bend light.
  • Geology: Earth cycles, ecosystems, energy sources, pollution, and the relationship between natural resources and sustainability.
  • Astronomy: Measuring the universe, space travel, the possibility of alien life, and the future of space exploration.

One of the highlights of Science Book 4 is the Electron Hotel game, featured in the student workbook. This interactive activity helps students visualize and practice how electrons fill s, p, and d orbitals, offering a hands-on introduction to electron configurations and atomic structure—key concepts for middle school chemistry.

Category Description for Real Science 4 Kids Curriculum

Real Science 4 Kids Science is the newest science program from Gravitas Publications. Similar in content to Exploring the Building Blocks of Science, the author introduces chemistry first, followed by biology, physics, geology, and astronomy. The beautiful hardcover textbook presents complex science concepts in a way kids will understand. Textbooks are written at a slightly advanced reading level so parents should be reading the text with the student if using the books corresponding to the grade level - unless the student can read and comprehend the text independently. Throughout the textbook are engaging illustrations, chapter summaries, and pronunciation for science vocabulary.

Student and teacher pages are available separately. Student pages include a study notebook with fun activities to go with each chapter and hands-on labs that correlate with specific chapters. Some of the activity pages require students to cut and glue to make a layered mini book. Teacher pages include lesson plans, mid-term and final quizzes, and answers to the student notebook. A Digital Library subscription is also available, which gives you access to all grade levels of texts, PDF student and teacher resources, and a full Science Library of early readers for science.
