Description

It's hard to beat flashcards for visual connections and practice with the various word sounds. These cards go one step further and encourage a tactile finger-tracing experience. These are colorful, quality cards with many nice features. The sixty 4"x 5 5/8" cards are double-sided with rounded corners.

The front side shows the letter or letters that comprise a sound. These 1 ½" letters are lower-case with print letters. This side also shows an associative word. One nice (and unusual) feature of these letters is the embedded dot that shows where to start letter formation. That makes these cards perfect for finger-tracing practice.

The back side of each card provides an illustration of the associative word. Included also on this side are dots that designate the sounds heard in that word. For instance, the sound /ng/ has “ring" as the associative word. The picture side shows three dots for the three sounds of the word - /r/ /i/ /ng/.

A small booklet that accompanies the flashcard set gives brief instructions for learning the sounds, writing the letters, listening for the sounds, and blending the sounds together. The 43 letter sounds are covered first; then the alternative spellings for each sound.

This is a quality set of cards and a nice complement to the Jolly Phonics program material. My only quibble with them is the lack of a card number printed directly on the card. There are numbers associated with each card, but your only way to identify them is through a chart in the booklet. I would be tempted to write those numbers in as discretely as possible on each card.

Publisher's Description of Jolly Phonics Picture Flashcards

Jolly Phonics Picture Flashcards (in print letters) introduce children to the skills needed for reading and writing. Designed for whole class or group practice, as well as home, they are ideal for use with children aged between 3-7 years and can help children develop awareness of letter sounds and digraphs.

This is a set with 60 picture flash cards covering all the letter sounds taught in Jolly Phonics, plus 17 alternatives. On one side the picture is shown, along with dots, which indicate the number of sounds in the word. On the reverse, the letter sound and word relating to the picture are shown.

The pack contains:

  • 60 double-sided flashcards (43 main letter sounds cards & 17 alternative spelling cards)
  • 1 Instruction Booklet
  • Category Description for Jolly Phonics K4 (ages 4+)

In Jolly Phonics K4, children use multisensory methods such as catchy songs, delightful stories, and fun actions to learn the 42 letter sounds, then move from single sounds to blended letter sounds. Sounds are taught first (before letter names) and in a specific order that allows children to start reading as soon as possible. Resources used at this level include revised Finger Phonics Readers (with new illustrations and information panels for parents), Phonics Workbooks, Decodable Readers, Flashcards, Phonics Cards, and Handwriting Books. These resources provide a gradual way to build a great foundation for learning to read and learning proper letter formation. You can use the materials for this age as a precursor to Jolly Phonics K5 or another phonics program. Because of the spiral nature of Jolly Learning products, children do not need to complete the K4 program before moving to Jolly Phonics or Jolly Literacy. There is no teacher’s book at this level; although, guidance is provided within the workbooks and readers.
