Beginning with the study of Early Medieval Europe (Byzantine Empire through Vikings), this engaging history course looks at the Islamic Caliphates (the Beginning and Golden Age of Islam, Warring Muslim Empires, and the Ottoman Empire), Asian Empires (Dynasties of China, Japanese Shoguns, Mongol Empire, and SE Asia), Pacific Peoples (Aboriginal Australians, Melanesia and Micronesia, Polynesia), Europe in the High Middle Ages (Feudal System, Crusades, Eastern and Western Europe), Medieval Britian (Anglo Saxons, Normans, Hundred Year’s War, War of the Roses), North American Peoples (Olmec, Maya & Aztec, Mound Builders, Native American Tribes), African Kingdoms (Mali Empire, Benin and Kongo, Ethiopia, Swahili Coast), and the Renaissance (Italian, Northern and English). The Usborne Encyclopedia of World History and Kingfisher History Encyclopedia are referenced in every unit and may be beneficial to have in your personal library. In addition, a great number of additional books are suggested to enhance the lessons. Students will also need access to a notebook and paper (or the Book of Years # 029653), the internet, art and craft supplies and other household items. As a family focused, multilevel curriculum, there are a lot of options and flexibility built into each unit.
Middle Ages of History for Layers of Learning (Year Two)
Description
Middle Ages History is a history course that covers from approximately AD 500 to 1500. It includes the history of people all over the world from Europe to Africa to Asia to the Americas. In it students learn the major events that shaped the past, see how kings and governments treated their people, and determine what causes nations to thrive. Students are asked to read widely, think deeply, and get their hands messy.
This is not a textbook; it is a guidebook for mentors to use as lessons and resources to design a custom course for your students.
Take an adventure together through history and geography with this interactive family approach to learning. Courses are divided into 9 units, with each unit taking about one month. This is flexible, as each unit offers teaching notes, library lists, activities, enrichment ideas, and carefully selected rabbit trails to go deeper into a topic. Families with learners of different ages will appreciate that within each unit, the activities and recommended reading are further divided into three grade levels: 1-4, 5-8, and 9-12, along with lesson activities and readings as a family.
Layers of Learning offers separate history and geography courses that can be used separately or in tandem. If new to cyclical history study, it is recommended that you begin with Ancient History (Year 1), although families who have completed an ancient history course could begin with Middle Ages (Year 2) or Colonial History (Year 3).
Geography begins with an overview in Year 1, People and Planet. Year 2 expands on this knowledge with Mapping Our World, and World Cultures are studied in Year 3.
Also available are corresponding, optional Student Journals that are used throughout the four years to personalize the learning experience: the Book of Years blank timeline and World Explorer’s Journal.
