Description

The second book is more intensive. Besides reviewing the first year's lessons, students tackle readings from Caesar's Commentaries, work extensive exercises, and complete Latin-English and English-Latin activities. There are several boxes of vocabulary for each lesson. Students who have completed the first year should be able to start right into the readings; however, the first 16 lessons provide a review and a slower start into the second year if students are not ready to jump right into Caesar. The readings also progress in difficulty, starting with simple sentences.
Publisher's Description of Henle Second Year Latin

The backbone of Henle Latin Second Year is intensive language study, including review of the first year plus new materials. Separated into four parts, Henle Latin Second Year includes readings from Caesar's Commentaries, extensive exercises, and Latin-English vocabularies.

Humanistic insight and linguistic training are the goals of the Henle Latin Series from Loyola Press, an integrated four-year Latin course. Time-tested and teacher endorsed, this comprehensive program is designed to lead the student systematically through the fundamentals of the language itself and on to an appreciation of selected classic texts.

Category Description for Henle Latin

Henle Latin is a classic, rigorous, and highly respected four-year Latin program from Loyola University Press. Designed for serious high school students, it provides a systematic, thorough approach to Latin grammar, vocabulary, and translation, preparing students to read original Latin texts with confidence.

The program emphasizes mastery of forms and syntax through steady progression, moving from basic grammar to reading authentic works by Caesar, Cicero, and Virgil.

Henle Latin’s Four Levels

  • First Year Henle: Thorough grounding in Latin forms, basic syntax, and vocabulary. Includes simple readings and many practice exercises.
  • Second Year Henle: Reviews first-year material and moves into Caesar’s Commentaries. Features extensive translation practice (Latin to English and English to Latin).
  • Third Year Henle: Focuses primarily on Cicero with translation exercises drawn directly from his writings.
  • Fourth Year Henle: Advanced readings from both Cicero and Virgil, with longer and more challenging passages.

Curriculum Components

  • Henle Latin Textbooks (4 volumes): The core student books with lessons, readings, exercises, and vocabulary lists.
  • Latin Grammar (1 volume for all 4 years): Essential reference book covering forms and syntax. Heavily used in Years 1-2 and recommended for review in Years 3-4.
  • Answer Keys: Essential part of the program and separate key for each level. These provide answers to most exercises (simple drills are sometimes omitted).

Note on Content: As a Catholic publisher, Henle Latin includes some religious content, especially in the First Year book. This may appeal to families seeking a Catholic perspective or who are comfortable with occasional religious references.

Henle Latin is an excellent choice for motivated high school students who want a traditional, in-depth Latin program that emphasizes accuracy, translation skills, and the ability to read classical authors in the original language.
