Torpedoed by Deborah Heiligman is the true story of the tragedy of SS City of Benares. In England in September 1940, one hundred children board a ship that their parents believe will take them to Canada, safely away from the war in England. But after only a few days at sea, a German submarine torpedoes the ship, resulting in tragedy beyond comprehension. The author has compiled this book based entirely on survivor’s stories and primary source documents. In all its historical accuracy, the book is written excellently and tactfully, portraying the calamity without being graphic or dramatic, and respectfully honoring those who gave their lives for others and those who fought to survive themselves. Each chapter is broken into several sections and follows different people or groups of people throughout the journey, from the decision to sail on the ship to either their fate or their rescue. Historical photos in every chapter add weight to the author’s careful words. At the end is a list of all those who perished, as well as a summary of the survivors’ lives after they reached safety. Although it handles a very heavy topic, the thoughtful writing of the book makes it appropriate for middle schoolers to read and understand. A thorough bibliography and notes section at the end points readers to more resources and underlines the accuracy of the story. 301 pages, softcover.

Description
Publisher's Description of Torpedoed
From award-winning author Deborah Heiligman comes Torpedoed, a true account of the attack and sinking of the passenger ship SS City of Benares, which was evacuating children from England during WWII.
Amid the constant rain of German bombs and the escalating violence of World War II, British parents by the thousands chose to send their children out of the country: the wealthy, independently; the poor, through a government relocation program called CORB. In September 1940, passenger liner SS City of Benares set sail for Canada with one hundred children on board.
When the war ships escorting the Benares departed, a German submarine torpedoed what became known as the Children's Ship. Out of tragedy, ordinary people became heroes. This is their story. This title has Common Core connections.
