Description

Previously, All About Learning devised Something Fishy, going “under water” to help review your student’s All About® Reading or All About® Spelling words. Now, they take to the sky! Honestly, you could use this fowl-based activity book for any spelling or reading program as a fun way to head toward mastery. There are 16 Activities; for each, choose either the reading or spelling review word activities for your student (or both--depending on your need). Along the way, learn fun facts about the birds you study. Did you know a group of peacocks is called an ostentation? Of course, it is! Activities range from reviewing anywhere from 8 to 14 words and also vary in task: create a peacock of words; build an origami crane (an easy or advanced level) replete with your choice of words. Pages 95-96 provide extra consumable pages for playing activities again, but laminating for longer use is encouraged. Parent, be prepared to play! You’ll be evaluating the spelling and dictating vocabulary, but these activities are a winner! Nonreproducible, 150 pgs. ~ Ruth

Category Description for All About Spelling

All About Spelling is a multisensory, mastery-based spelling program designed specifically for homeschoolers and tutors. Using the Orton-Gillingham approach, it teaches spelling through phonograms, the sounds letters and letter combinations make, rather than rote memorization of word lists. The program is gentle, logical, and highly effective, especially for students who struggle with traditional spelling methods.

The lessons are lightly scripted and easy to teach, taking the guesswork out of instruction. Each level contains around 25-30 steps, with built-in review and reinforcement so students truly master concepts before moving on.

All About Spelling’s Core Components

  • Teacher’s Manual: Lightly scripted lessons with clear instructions and helpful teaching tips
  • Student Materials Packet: Word cards, phonogram cards, key cards, and activity sheets
  • Letter Tiles Kit: Color-coded tiles used across all 7 levels (one-time purchase)
  • Review Box with Divider Cards: For organized daily review (one-time purchase)

How Lessons Work

Each lesson follows a consistent five-part structure:

  • Before You Begin: Overview and materials list for the teacher
  • Review: Targeted review of previously learned concepts
  • New Teaching: Interactive, multisensory instruction using letter tiles, flashcards, and dictation
  • Advanced Application: Extra practice with challenging words (in higher levels)
  • Track Your Progress: Students mark mastered skills on a progress chart

Key Program Features

  • Teaches 72 phonograms that cover the majority of English spelling patterns
  • Strong emphasis on mastery and daily customized review
  • Multisensory activities using tiles, cards, dictation, and games
  • Clear scripting that makes teaching straightforward for parents
  • Progress chart and Certificate of Achievement upon completion of each level

Important Notes: The Letter Tiles and the Review Box are required but are one-time purchases used throughout the entire program. Levels are based on skill rather than grade level. The program focuses exclusively on spelling and does not include vocabulary instruction. Students should be able to read basic CVC words and simple blends before starting Level 1.

All About Spelling is an excellent choice for families who want a thorough, logical, and multisensory spelling program that builds deep understanding and long-term spelling success.
