A Child's Geography Volume 3: Explore the Classical World
- An open-and-go, biblically grounded geography program that is engaging and hands-on!
- Many optional Timeline and Map exercises to promote map-reading skills and include in student’s notebooking
- Pages are 3-hole punched and perforated for easy removal or photocopying (for family use)
What better way to ground your studies of ancient history than with a solid understanding of the geography of those cultures? Written in a similar style to the first two volumes, the third in the A Child's Geography series explores the classical world—including Italy, Greece, Malta, and the Balkans—in 15 chapters. The text in each chapter transports readers to the region, imagining that they are touring the country and weaving in detail of people they may meet as well as the history and stories of some of the buildings and sites. Full-color photographs of the landscape, landmarks, and ruins adorn just about every page. I also love how children are introduced to popular foods of the culture and the easy-to-follow recipes that are included! Activity pages are varied and include short-answer questions, mapping exercises, seek-a-word puzzles, timeline activities, and travel journal suggestions. Review lessons and flashcard suggestions are also included to aid student learning. While the content of this course makes it a perfect companion to an ancient history study, you could also enjoy it on its own. You can work through it in a year, spending two weeks on each chapter, or finish in a semester going through one chapter a week. Even if you haven't used either of the previous volumes, I would encourage you to jump in with this one; it is well-produced, interesting, and provides an incredible amount of information about the geography and culture (present and past) of the birthplace of western civilization. Recommended resources include Map Trek Atlas and Wonders of Old timeline book. Includes NIV Scripture references, although families could easily use the version of their choice. 442 pgs, pb. ~ Jess/Deanne
Using a mix of geography and history, your students will learn about the classical world, and the story of different people groups leaving Babel and spreading their culture and influence around the world. A Child's Geography Vol. 3: Explore the Classical World is designed for students in the 4th – 6th grade level. It is scheduled for 3-day weeks over a year-long interactive journey. Students completing this course will:
- Explore the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, including Greece and Italy
- Visit the Balkan Peninsula to explore Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia, and more
- Discover historic sites that include castles, monasteries, fortresses, windmills, and ancient ruins
- See how Christians like the Apostle Paul and others helped bring God's Word to the world
Biblical Worldview
We approach this journey from a biblical worldview that affirms the truth of God's Word. As part of the course, students will learn about each country's history, which in a few cases includes very brief details about their false gods, such as the Greek "gods" of Olympus. In today's popular culture, these "gods" are often portrayed as heroes in movies, comic books, and more. We, however, have chosen to take the factual approach, making clear these stories are myths about false gods while reaffirming the eternal truths of the one true God as presented in His Holy Word.
Course components include:
- Travel Log notes at the end of each section to sum up important points
- Travel Journal at the end of each chapter to record trip highlights, favorites, and more
- Supply list, recipes, and crafts
- Worksheets, chapter tests, final exam, glossary, and answer key
- Maps and activities to promote map-reading skills
- A helpful course calendar for easy scheduling.
