Category Description for Level 7 Books

The English language can be a tricky language to read. Level 7 of the ABC series builds on the first six levels and addresses some tricky sounds. This book has three sections:

Part 1 - Irregular Consonants/Consonant Blends – Soft C, D as /J/ sound, G as /J/ sound, Q as K sound, S as /Z/ sound, X as /Z/ sound, Y as short /i/ sound, GH as /F/ sound, CH as /SH/ and /K/ sounds, SS as /SH/ sound, DGE as /J/ sound.

Part 2 – Irregular Vowel Sounds – SCHWA sounds, A as the short /O/ sound, AU or AW as /AW/ sound, /OI/ and /OY/ sounds, OR and UR as /ER/ sound.

Part 3 – Silent Letters – the 11 letters and 1 letter blend that sometimes make no sound at all: B, C, D, G, H, K, N, P, S, U, W, and GH.

You can work at your child’s pace. A line connecting two or three letters makes it clear that they should be sounded out together. Hand motions are attached to the line. In the case of words and irregular sounds that include silent letters, an X will be used rather than an animal illustration hint. At the end of the book, there are 60 words without guide pictures for a reading challenge.

You can purchase the books and flashcards individually or in a Level 7 Bundle for your convenience and savings!

*If your student is new to this program, either Level 1 or Level 2 Learn to Read books will be helpful in learning the individual letter sounds and motions. Level 3 teaches 17 beginning blend sounds, Level 4 teaches 17 ending blend sounds, Level 5 teaches long vowel sounds, and Level 6 teaches 24 common sight words. There is also an irregular sounds review guide at the end of this workbook for reference. ~Amber
