The key moment of this rivalry was the Battle of Trafalgar, fought on October 21, 1805, off the coast of Spain. Admiral Horatio Nelson, a distinguished strategist and national hero, commanded the British fleet from the deck of HMS Victory, a sailing ship of the line built between 1759 and 1765 at the Chatham Dockyard.

Nelson led his squadron against a combined Franco-Spanish force commanded by Admiral Pierre de Villeneuve.

The battle ended in a complete victory for the Royal Navy: 19 enemy ships were captured, while the rest were destroyed or fled. However, the battle itself cost Admiral Nelson his life, who died from a gunshot wound during the fight, becoming a symbol of sacrifice and patriotism.

This victory was It sealed Britain's naval supremacy for decades to come and once and for all ended Napoleon's plans to invade the British Isles.
