The P-47 Thunderbolt was produced by the Americans from 1941–1945 and was used as the primary fighter-bomber in ground attacks targeting tanks, railroads, and supply vehicles. Armed with 5-inch rockets, up to 2,500 pounds of bombs, and eight .50 caliber Browning machine guns that could fire 100 rounds per second, the P-47 was one of the best American aircraft of the war. It was affectionately nicknamed the “Jug” by its crews.
